Internet Marketing: What is it?

I bet like me you have heard all about this new thing called internet marketing. So what is it? Well let's break it down, its marketing on the internet, sorry if that sounds like too dumb, but that's it. Where the complication comes in is how it works.

So lets look first at the marketing part. Do you remember (if you're old enough), direct mail marketing. This was when someone had your name and address and would send you an offer from a store. So you would get Dear Mr O'Brien, we would like to give you this special offer just for you. It's not promoted in our store, just for you our special customer. Etc, etc' So what happens, you would go to the store, if you are interested and purchase. So now let's add the internet section. Again let's use the store example.

On the net, your store is the website. So you go off and get a website built, you have a great product. The best in the world. Its just like having a store, your select your product, you find your store and you fit it out. Great, but no-one knows where it is. So you advertise, on the local paper, send out flyers, to create TRAFFIC. Traffic is also an internet term and guess what?, it means the same thing, get footfall to your site (or store). But advertising in the papers and dropping out flyers won't do anything. So what do you do?

Well Google provides some of the solution with PPC, ad words and a load of wonderful terms like SEO,etc. So what are they, well this would become a book the size of the bible if we go into it all. But some we will have a look at PPC is pay per click, so when you set up an account with GOGGLE, who if you Google it, give you great help. This now starts pushing people to your site. You have to pick keywords.

But remember to make money you need to SELL SOMETHING, the common mistake most people make is they set up a corporate website, which is like a glorified phone book with pictures. Looks great but does nothing, internet marketing is the opposite of this. It's about making money with your site, on line.

So now you have a store one way of a hundred to drive traffic. How do you beef it up? Well by an opt in page, ohh what's that. Simple its a web Page (not a site) that has a box, to put your name into. You also put in your email address. (to test it out go to http://www.potofgold.com) . This creates a list just like the store, we mentioned above, that allows people receive special offers just for them.

When people opt in (put in their name and email), they are offered a one off great bargain. This is also where you can offer people some of your products. They can accept or if you have a corporate site, they can carry on here. You have completed the circle.

Hopefully this have given you an insight into the new frontier that is internet marketing.
